We all know the last few winters have been very cold, producing snow and ice storms; so why not prepare before it gets too cold?

Roofs Over Georgia is suggesting the following to prepare your roof for Fall/Winter.  Make sure you are taking care of both the inside and outside of your house (we suggest roof maintenance at least twice a year).

Outdoors

1. Trim and or cut down overgrown trees, shrubs, etc.

2. Clean all debris off roof and gutters. Clogged gutters can create major damage, causing leaks and rotten wood.   Call Roofs Over Georgia at 678-386-2159 to schedule one of our roofing/gutter specialists to inspect and/or clean off the debris.  Also ask about the leaf off gutter system.

3.  Re-caulk areas where you see might be a potential problem.

4. Make sure flashing, siding, etc. are sealed and secured.

Steps to Selling Your Home

We all know how difficult the economy is these days, especially when it comes to our homes loosing value.  These days it is difficult to sell your home; many will not see much activity.  However, it is a buyer’s market and what a great time to get your dream home for a reasonable price.  Everyone always asks and wants to know how do we make our home stand out from the rest and bring top dollar, especially in this market?  It is careful planning and knowing how to professionally stage your home that will sell your home.  Below are suggestions to prep and stage your home and turn it into an irresistible home for the buyer.

1.  Disassociate yourself with your home – Yes it is emotional to sell your home, especially with all your memories, but remember the minute you place that for sale sign in the yard it is no longer your home.  You have to tell yourself this is not my home, it is a house, a product that someone else will enjoy as much as we have.

2. De-Personalize and De-Clutter – Potential home-buyers don’t want to see personal touches such as photographs and family heirlooms. Buyer’s are known for not being able to see past personal artifacts.  You don’t want them to be distracted; you want them to imagine themselves in the house and say “I can see myself and our things in this house.”   De-cluttering is always a hard thing to do, but it just has to be done.  We all collect and consume a lot of stuff.  Rules to de-clutter are below:

• If you haven’t used it in over a year donate it or throw it away.
• Remove all books from bookcases.
• Pack up all knickknacks
• Clean off everything on kitchen counters.  Rule of thumb is leave only 1 appliance on the counter top (usually it is a coffee pot).
• Put essential items used daily in a small box that can be stored when not in use.
• Organize all drawers, cabinets, and closets (office, bedroom, bathroom, etc.) Buyers love to snoop.  If a buyer sees how organized you are, they will say they took great care of the house.
  • Closets – organize by color coding, shirts buttoned, facing the same direction, and use the same color hanger (white or wood).  This will make the closet look larger and put together. Make sure to line up your shoes.
  • In the kitchen – alphabetize spice jars, neatly stack dishes, turn coffee cup handles the same direction
• Always have your laundry room free of “to-do” laundry. Make sure the laundry and folded and put away.
• Almost every home shows better with less furniture. Remove the larger pieces of furniture that block paths and walkways and put in storage. Renting a storage unit is the best way to store all your personal items and furniture.  Leave only the necessities in each room to showcase the room’s purpose.

• Remember what the buyer sees is what they will want.  If you are taking your drapes, chandelier, etc. replace it with something else so the buyer never sees your items you are taking.

3. Make Minor Repairs and make the house shine

• Fix holes in walls
• Paint walls a neutral color
• Replace burned out light bulbs
• Wash windows inside and out
• Pressure wash driveway, garage, walkway, etc
• Clean out cobwebs
• Polish faucets, mirrors, hardware
• Clean out the refrigerator and freezer
• Vacuum daily
• Replace worn rugs and bedspreads

5.  Curb Appeal – Everyone knows if you see a pretty house from the outside you’ll want to see what the inside looks like.  If a buyer doesn’t like what they see from the outside, they won’t go inside and there won’t be a sale.  To make sure all buyers like what they see the following are suggested.

• Keep sidewalks/pathways clear and clean.
• Always mow the lawn.  Best to mow weekly if you house is on the market.
• Plant flowers and group flower pots together.  Yellow flowers, such as marigolds or tulips, are best because it evokes a buying emotion. Make sure the bushes are trimmed
• Make sure your house number is easy to read from the street

We all know about the catastrophic tornadoes and severe weather that tore through our cities last week and the devastation it has caused.  The devastation that a tornado can cause is heartbreaking, especially for those who have lost a loved one.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who is suffering.

As President Obama said during a press conference, “We can’t control when or where a terrible storm may strike, but we can control how we respond to it.”

The definition of a tornado according to Wikipedia is a violent, dangerous, rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud.

Tornado Watch – it is issued to alert people of the possibility of a tornado developing in the area.

Tornado Warning – it is notification that a tornado has been seen or picked up by radar.  This means take shelter immediately.

You may see/hear the following during a tornado watch/warning:

• Dark greenish or orange-gray skies
• Large hail
• Large, dark, rotating or funnel shaped cloud(s)
• A loud roaring that sounds like a freight train

Like President Obama said, “we can’t control when or where the storm will strike,” but we can take precautions.

Tornado Precautions & Preparations

1. Pick a place in your home that provides the best available shelter.   The best places are a basement, first floor closet or bathroom (make sure there are no windows).   When figuring out where you and your family will seek shelter, make sure you’ll be safe from falling debris. Bring towels, blankets to sit on and pillows or a mattress if you can fit it in the room to put over your heads.

2. If you live in a mobile home, immediately abandon it and seek proper shelter. Make sure you can reach your destination within 5 minutes or less.

3.  If you live in a high rise building or staying in a hotel, seek shelter on the first floor of the building.  If you can’t get there in time, find a space away from exterior walls and windows. Bring a pillow with you to put over your head to protect you from falling debris.

4.  Do not try to outrun a tornado in a car and if on a highway, do not get under a highway overpass or bridge.

5. Buy a weather radio and use it.  You’ll be glad you have one, especially when your TV and lights go out.

6.  Have a tornado/disaster kit ready in you shelter space.  You should include the following in your kit:

• A first aid kit and any essential medications.
• Any special needs for your family members.
• Bottled water (2 for each family member) and nonperishable food items (don’t forget your can opener).
• Your weather radio (preferable battery operated). Have extra batteries on hand.
• Flashlight(s).  Have extra batteries.  DO NOT USE CANDLES.
• Spare shoes – you’ll need these when walking through any post storm debris and rubble.
• Spare clothing.
• Blankets and pillows (1 each per family member.)
• A whistle – this will allow rescuers to hear you if trapped.
• Cell phone

7.  Have a meeting place where everyone can meet after the tornado, should you get separated.
